<\/a><\/p>\n“After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.<\/p>\n
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. In these lay a multitude of invalids\u2014blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, \u201cDo you want to be healed?\u201d The sick man answered him, \u201cSir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.\u201d Jesus said to him, \u201cGet up, take up your bed, and walk.\u201d And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.<\/p>\n
Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, \u201cIt is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.\u201d But he answered them, \u201cThe man who healed me, that man said to me, \u2018Take up your bed, and walk.\u2019\u201d They asked him, \u201cWho is the man who said to you, \u2018Take up your bed and walk\u2019?\u201d Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, \u201cSee, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.\u201d The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, \u201cMy Father is working until now, and I am working.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
The above is from the ESV which, like most modern translations, does not include verse 4. The omitted verse reads as follows:<\/p>\n
for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.
