Alfonso’s bday

image

We went out to eat for some burritos after church this evening to celebrate Alfonso’s birthday. Surprisingly, they weren’t so bad. It’s the first burrito I’ve had in quite some time that has been good.

Paul and the Trinity

Review of Paul and the Trinity: Person, Relations, and the Pauline Letters by Wesley Hill

Chapter ONE: The Eclipse of Relations in the Interpretation of Pauline God-Talk

Wesley Hill begins his book by canvassing the various models of Pauline interpretation as they relate to identifying the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and their relation to each other. Hill’s contention is that exegesis of Paul’s writing should return to a trinitarian interpretive model, as opposed to the more common/modern monothestic emphasis that leads to christological categories such as high and low (designation that denote Christ’s relation to God).

“The conceptuality of a ‘low’ or ‘high’ christology threatens to obscure the way in which, for Paul, the identities of God, Jesus, and the Spirit are constituted by their relations with one another.” (p.25)

For Hill, the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, each have their own discrete identity. He proposes the only adequate way in which to describe their identity is through their interrelationship.

Much of chapter one is dedicated to an analysis of the history of this line of Pauline exegesis. Beginning with Athanasius and the Cappadocians and proceeding through Augustine and Thomas.

Interestingly, the cover of the book was taken from El Greco’s The Holy Trinity which is displayed at the Prada Museum in Madrid where we had opportunity to see it earlier this year.

Jeep repairs

Last Saturday I had opportunity to spend the day working on the jeep. I have a long list of things to do, but all in good time.

The thermostat housing was looking rather rough. The thermostat itself was even worse. I also replaced the upper radiator hose.

The valve cover also was in rough shape, though it didn’t seem to be leaking. Even so, I removed it in order to paint it and to replace the gasket. In the process, I broke off the CCV valve. Fortunately, I had anticipated this possibility and had ordered a spare when I ordered the other parts. Removing that valve and grommet was a bit of a nightmare.

Getting the new valve and grommet in place was a breeze. The black engine paint worked out really well.

Scout’s new outfit

Given’s Scout’s history, I thought it appropriate to get him something that keeps his mouth closed. Naturally, he hates it. But I love it. I think it looks cool. The photo above was taken the first day I brought it home, so it’s actually upside down.

San Carlos fun

image

Yun and I do not head to San Carlos very often. Much less than when we lived in the US. That’s sad because we’re only an hour away. However, we have friends that have a home right off the water that invited us over for dinner a week ago. We arrived for dinner, but they invited us to stay a couple days in their guest house instead. We had a lot of fun despite running out of clean clothes.

It was supremely fun. We enjoyed the conversations and they were very generous to have us use their things. The vehicle above was one such example. It goes anywhere and so Yun and I toured around town, the beaches, and a near by village for the day.

Neighborhood party

image

We really enjoy living in our neighborhood. The people are strangely friendly (for Mexico) and we’ve had fun getting to know them. A month or so ago we had a neighborhood party at one of the pools. 50 to 60 people were in attendance and we had opportunity to meet nearly everyone. I took this awesome selfie.
