Mexican farms

20140407_155337

Yesterday Yun and I had the opportunity to visit a number of farms an hour or so south of the city. Martha and her brothers accompanied us as well.

The primary crop that we saw was garbanzo beans. There were also fields of wheat, other types of beans,  cucumbers, and squash. I’m not a big fan of the garbanzo bean, mostly because I have no idea what you would use it for.

It was fun to see the country and to enjoy the fresh air.

Sonoran dogs

image

We went out for hotdogs last night to a stand we’ve never been to before. I went with the one filled with cheese and wrapped in bacon. Not too bad.

Oleanders

20140407_140007
We have some really nice oleanders in the front of our house. The bloom all year due to a special overdose of homemade nitrogen fertilizer I feed them regularly. Despite being poisonous (to eat), we’ve never had any problems with the dogs messing with them.

They seem to produce seed pods throughout the year. I pulled off a few this afternoon in hopes to start growing some more. Years ago I bought some oleander seeds of ebay that I started to grow in my office at work. They did just fine and I gave a number of them away.

El Porton del Sabor

Yun and had lunch at El Porton del Sabor today. This is a nice restaurant downtown which we were first introduced by our Lebanese friend. The food was great the first time and even better today.

Google chat

Yun and I had opportunity to visit the Richards in Albuquerque yesterday via Google video chat. It’s a fun way to spend time with each other in light of the physical distance that separates us from spending time together in person.

It was a nice day outside (ie, not too hot), so I planted some new plants I bought last week. The green stuff on the left is a vine (some form of ivy I think) that grows abundantly here. I have been plundering from a nearby park and propagating in water in order to grow them at our house. They have been doing really well. The trick seems to be to plant them in groups of 4 or more cuttings and water generously every day for the first week.

I planted five plants today among the ivy. The blue one in the center is a Plumbago (plumbago auriculata). Next to it on each side are two Citronella plants. They smell spectacular and I thought they might work as a helpful mosquito repellant. From what I’ve read online though, they have no benefit for that. Apparently it is the Citronella grass that is effective in doing that. Bummer. At least they smell great.

Next to each Citronella is Ixora Karla. It’s a nice looking flower which looks ready to bloom. When it blooms, it supposed to look something like this:

It’s possible they’re all dead within a week. That would certainly be consistent to past performance. At least plants are really cheap here. The hope is that the ivy will grow around the other plants and provide a nice looking ground cover from the brutal summer heat (as opposed to the brutal winter heat).

Tucson

Yun and I headed up to Tucson on Sunday evening to spend a couple days with Matt and Dana and to pick up some treasure. We have a most excellent tradition which we have consistently maintained the last three visits. A tradition of spectacular steak coupled with my legendary fried potatoes. Cigars immediately follow the meal to assist with digestion. I love this tradition!

And once dinner was over, we moved on to our other tradition of Spades. This is a game we’ve been playing for many years and one in which I generally dominate.

And the dogs love the trips north as much as we do. They are able to revisit some favorite places, including the wash behind M&D’s house. He doesn’t seem to get enough.

pup

bills ridiculously cute puppy

Our friend has two Belgian Shepherds. They’re not pure bred, but they’re very nice looking dogs. The female gave birth to a litter of puppies a few weeks ago. It is very tempting to add one more to our pack. But I’m pretty sure Scout would probably not tolerate any new additions.

Tila walking

tila is hilarious

I’m trying to train Tila to walk on two legs. There’s probably a better way to do it. But I have been getting her to stand on two legs every time I feed her. She’s slowly getting better. This will be most hilarious if accomplished!
