New restaurant: George’s Town
We went to a new restaurant by our house today called George’s Town. It is near a number of restaurants we have frequented and mostly do not like. So we didn’t have high expectations for this place. However, as it turned out, the food was pretty good. It was mostly Western style American food. I had a giant pork leg that was spectacular. We will definitely be coming back to this place.

Clams in Empalme
We went to Empalme yesterday to buy some (a lot) of seafood before heading back to Hermosillo from Guaymas. On the way back, we stopped at a clam stand where Gab assured us we would enjoy the clams. Well, with a LOT of salsa, they’re not all that bad. They were incredibly cheap. About a dollar something for a dozen. I think I would have enjoyed them more if the lady preparing them looked even a little clean. Such was not the case.

Food storage
I bought a few hundred pounds of rice nearly 5 years ago. It seemed like a good idea at the time and I love rice. We’ve barely made a dent into our supply, but after so many years, it still tastes great. I store it in a mylar bag, in a food grade 5 gallon bucket, with a lid that twists on and off and has a rubber seal. The price of rice in large quantities is significantly lower than what you pay at the grocery store. I bought this jasmine rice at a specialty store in Tucson at $30 for 50 pounds. I bought a number of 50 pound bags from Costco for $16 a bag. Since we have a large pantry in our house now, it is no longer such an inconvenience to store the buckets.

My first harvest
We have neighbors here with enormous orange trees that branch on our property. As a result, we are able to enjoy some spectacular tasting oranges.

The Doctrine of Scripture
Currently I am reading Van Til’s The Doctrine of Scripture. It’s been ages since I’ve read Van Til. I read his A Survey of Christian Epistemology in 1999 and have appreciated a number of his books ever since. His Dutch background makes him hard to digest, but at least he’s no Dooyeweerd (who is almost entirely unintelligible). Van Til is someone I need to read slow and carefully. This book is certainly no exception to that rule.
“No one can be a scientist in any intelligible way without at the same time having a philosophy of reality as a whole.” (51)
“The non-Christian scientist may and does believe in the presence of order, but he has no warrant for doing so. His assumed philosophy of chance points to the opposite.” (52)

Pickles
There is a new restaurant that has opened up a block from our house. It is called Pickles. I am convinced it will fail. The location is not good for a restaurant. Also, the parking is horrible. However, since there are no customers, that is not a problem. Clearly someone put some time and money into this place. It’s sad to see that all go to waste. The place itself is not too bad. It would be pretty good to hold a poker party at a place like this. If I can ever find enough people to play, that might just happen.
Overall, the burger was not very good. It fell apart and the bun was much too soggy half-way into it. If I had a place like this, I would quickly be coming up with ways to supplement the non-existent income coming in from food sales.

Carne asada
We had Gab, Alejandra, and Beto over for carne asada last night. As always, so good. But as always, I ate far too much. I’m not sure I’ll ever learn. I am eating way too much red meat here. I love it, but my body seems to have a problem with the level I am consuming. Yesterday I started jogging in the morning. It felt great. But today I was too tired. Perhaps I can make up for it tonight. Exercise isn’t much fun.
