baking soda

20130819_061418

Apparently the baking soda in the fridge is to be changed every thirty days, not every three years. Easy mistake.

Strange we didn’t catch this before the move. I’m not convinced the stuff actually does anything anyway.

ice-cream and hand tools

20130819_180704

While shopping the other day,  I noticed the brand of our ice cream was also the brand of a set of tools. That’s when you know it’s going to be good ice cream. It’s all about diversity.

Tres Parejas – First Annual 2013

Tres Parejas

July 2013 was the first annual Tres Parejas de Patio reunion. This was a reunion of the “three couples” (ie, tres parejas) of friends that used to all live in Tucson. As the Rottmans and us no longer live in Tucson, this was our (at least) once a year opportunity to spend time together. We spent the weekend at the Holley’s cabin up Mt. Lemmon. “Cabin” is a bit misleading here. It’s a very spacious three-floor home with incredible views in the coolest part of southern Arizona. We all experience 100+ temperatures this time of year in our respective home towns, so the dip into the 60s up Mt. Lemmon was especially inviting.

We each arrived Friday evening. In time for some good food and some even better wine. Dana’s responsibility on this trip included preparation of an array of fine wines. We had multiple bottles paired with each meal. Despite the lack of Vendange, she had some spectacular selections that went well with dinner.

On Saturday we hiked down to a local restaurant for lunch. The brief hike was a reminder that I really need more exercise. In the evening we had some great Mexican food prepared by Yun. She made enough to feed us for an additional week and included my favorite soup – caldo de queso.

One of Matt’s responsibilities included procuring the finest of cigars. He did just fine and we had plenty of good smokes. We even had some hookah! Some exceptional port (I generally hate port), sherry, and other spirits complimented the cigars. We had intentions to play cards, but just never got around to it.

We awoke well rested on Sunday to a brunch prepared by Jeff and Beth. There was so much bacon. I was very happy about this. We also had a good time of worship, with some music, creeds, and some time on John 4.

Of course, the highlight of the trip was receiving a very high quality t-shirt memorializing the event (which can be seen in the picture above). My responsibility, and obviously the most important for the trip, was obtaining the t-shirts. The consensus, of course, was that they were much nicer than anyone had expected. And only $20 something each!

jaw tremors

20130823_105444

We had to take Scout to the vet this morning.  His jaw had been trembling and has us quite concerned. My suspicion is that he has a bad tooth. If you rub his lower left jaw, he shakes pretty bad. Also,  his breath is unusually smelly. So we called the vet up the street and Yun is now inside with him. I am waiting in the car. If I were to go in, the bill would likely be twice as high.

So 800 pesos and various blood tests later, Scout has returned. There is some sort of infection in his mouth which may also be in his throat. It could be attributed to a bad tooth, but the inflammation must be reduced first, so he’s on a prescription of medication for the next week. If all goes well, we’ll have his tooth looked into at the end of the week and pursue dental work if that is necessary.

storm

20130819_185948

We did some shopping two days ago, which was the first in a while.  We eat out far too much here and are trying to change that.

We went to the store Mega for the first time. It’s nice,  but the prices aren’t the best,  so we won’t go there again. After Mega, we went to a butcher shop. The place we went to is where my favorite place in town gets their meat. So much fun to buy meat at a butcher shop. We even got meat for the dogs.

On our way home it turned black and began to pour. It was nice in that it went from the 100s to low 80s in about 15 minutes. It was a nice break from the heat. The problem later is the humidity. I am looking forward to winter.

Tacos with Paco y Elan

image

We had some spectacular tacos last night with Paco and his son Elan. The place we ate at was close to a house Yun lived at while doing her undergrad studies here in Hermosillo.

I’m at the bank once again.  It seems like we are here daily. This time Yun is with me. I prefer to wait in the car.

Mexico has an endless supply of parking lot attendants.  Little men that “help” you park and also watch over the cars.  Naturally they expect a tip. I find it a little annoying.

Money transfers

Paying bills here is done by wiring money. It’s a painful process. There is an extremely long line and I’ve never done this before by myself. Yun wrote a note for me to bring along in the event I run into trouble.

Early mornings

We hired a new employee this week which has required getting up at 5:30 each day. It has been a tough transition,  but coffee helps a lot. Mexican coffee is great.

We made lasagna for dinner and I made a movie to memorialize the event.

driving through Hermosillo

I bought a small camera to mount on the dash months ago. I used it for the first time the other day and thought I would upload the video. The camera was rather inexpensive, but the quality isn’t bad proportionate to the cost.
