scout gets a bath

This was a busy week for Yunuen and me. We drove down to Mexico last Sunday for dinner and some sweet Nintendo WII tennis competition. I believe I am already considered a threat amongst the family with that. We drove back to Mexico on Wednesday to meet Bruce and Jaime along with Yun’s parents. The meeting was for an upcoming church plant in Nogales and to explore what opportunities existed for medical missions in that city. We met at La Roca and had a great time and enjoyed some tasty food.

My uncle Dennis came into town this week for his annual flight training. We were able to meet up with him last night for sushi and a visit to Bevmo! Bevmo is a grocery store sized liquor store that has thousands of wine selections and a plethora of imported beer. I bought a bottle of Zhiguliovskoye, a Russian beer from Moscow. I am anxiously anticipating the consumption of that. Yun picked out a Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle, a Columbia Valley wine from a vineyard just up the street from my sister’s house. We like Columbia Valley wines quite a lot. I experimented with a bottle of Petite Sirah by Rosenblum Cellars per Dennis’ recommendation. And as if this place could be any greater, they also have a decent cigar selection! I was able to restrain myself though given the order of Gurkah’s I had purchased earlier that day!

Scout seems to be doing well with the transition into our home. We gave him a bath/shower outside today to help reduce his dog-stank. We like him a great deal and have had a lot of fun with him. I take him for a long ride every morning and then the same when I get home from work. There’s been a few times when I have taken him out to the desert and let him chase my truck. He’s able to do a 20mph sprint for nearly a mile.

Our tomatoes continue to do really well. I transplanted 6 Walla Walla onions I had begun growing at work in March today. I’m hoping they’ll be able to endure our sun. My Armenian cucumbers are doing exceptionally well and has recently started blossoming, so I anticipate good things to come soon. We have some bell peppers doing pretty well likewise.

We’re headed back to Mexico now for some carne asada and a bit Wii tennis rematch!

Scout!

scout042908.jpg

We have a new addition to the house by the name of Scout! We found Scout through an adoption center here in Tucson and made arrangements to adopt him a few days ago. Apparently Scout’s previous owners had to move out of town and were unable or unwilling to take him with them.

Scout has proven to be a great dog so far. He is quite smart and very loving. Fortunately, he is also house broken so we haven’t had any accidents yet. He’s been a bit shy since we got him but continues to become more comfortable each day.

We went to the park today and he seemed to enjoy that quite a lot. I had intended to take him to the dog park section and take him off his leash, but we do not have him licensed yet, so I thought it best not to bring him around other dogs at the park until then. I eventually did take him off his leash to which he immediately bolted! Fortunately, he returned promptly (as the picture below documents).

We are really excited about having a dog now. We have wanted one for quite some time and we think Scout is a good match for us.

The vegetables are still doing great and fortunately the dog hasn’t made a game of killing them! Here is a photo of the tomatoes which I anxiously anticipate eating soon:

Middle Eastern cuisine

Yunuen and I met up with Dave and Vivi this afternoon to eat at the Shishkebab House for some Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food. It was surprisingly good! Yun and I shared fafalel as an appetizer which was interesting. I ordered a Jordanian dish for my main course: Oozie (rice, onions, pine nuts, beef, and a side of laban). It was great!

Jeff and Beth came over later this evening for some cards. We played a game called “Hand and Foot” (see instructions here) which they tell us is something like Canasta. It was a lot of fun and naturally the guys decimated the girls!

Tucson Home Show 2008

Yunuen and I went to the Home Show today at the Tucson Convention Center. I love these sort of things and I was very excited when my boss gave me free tickets last week. This was my second time to this event at the convention center (last year with Liam) and as the last time it was packed with hundreds of vendors. We saw a great device for making sushi which I was inclined to get, but Yunuen (the wiser of the two) determined that $50 for a fairly cheap piece of plastic was a bit steep and that we’d likely find something a lot cheaper online. I came to my senses and we moved on to find another booth that caught our interest – sponges that are super absorbent! They had a nice presentation that included spilling things on the carpet and wonder sponge was able to get it all out! We couldn’t pass up the deal when it was only $25 and came with two other sponges and sweet towel of the same material to be used on my truck (which I wash once a year).

We continued our wandering until we made our way to a booth that was about to begin their cookware presentation. We were told to find seats which I assertively declined until I was handed a piece of paper with my chance to win a free prize! Needless to say we quickly found our seats and then were horrified to learn how inadequate our pots and pans at home are – we are literally burning off the vitamins and minerals! An hour after the presentation began we got to sample some of the food that was being cooked. The old guy next to me was given a piece of corn on the cob to try and then offered Yunuen a bite from the side of the corn he didn’t lick off. Oddly, she passed but then I was given my own piece of corn that I was eager to share.

It was well beyond an hour before we got to the climactic moment where the prices would be revealed. We had already been prepared over the course of the previous hour that quality cookware was not cheap, but our health deserved it. Even so, that didn’t prevent the horror we felt when we were told the entire kit would run over $2000! That was the sufficient slap to the senses that prompted us to stand up and walk away, despite the awkwardness of it all. I have been invited to Amway (and other pyramid scheme) meetings in the past that had a similar feel!

On an even sadder note, we just found out that Turks are not overly thrilled to have Mexicans visit their country and the consequential enormous cost both in time and money for Yunuen to obtain a visa for our upcoming trip. Confusing the time zone difference, I called Matt and Dana to awake them to the news. Matt is going to check today if the tickets are refundable. If not, Yunuen and I will be likely heading to Mexico City sometime in the next few weeks (likely driving the 30+ hours each way), or if we can, then we have the task of finding an equally exotic substitute!

Pine Club!

A promotional opportunity has arisen at work which is exciting and concerning at the same time. Concerning because I am not sure how it will compare to my present position (which I enjoy a great deal). Exciting, because it provides for a regular schedule (Monday-Friday with all weekends off) and has various vacation requests negotiated into the offer. One of which occurs at the end of May where we are headed off to San Carlos with Jeff, Beth, Luke, Maryanne, Ben, and Lis (and possibly Liam, but we’re not holding our breath). The water temperature will be ok (high 70s to low 80s), but not as nice as July and August when it will be in the 90s! It should still be sufficient for snorkeling and possibly scuba. We found a nice O’neil shorty for Yunuen last night which will be excellent for this trip (and in particularly should she ever become certified for diving). The exposure suits are ideal for San Carlos due to the frequent schools of jelly fish that happen to make an appearance every time we go there (but usually only one of the days for some reason).

The other trip I got was for a couple weeks a week after we get back from San Carlos – woohoo! We’re still in the exploratory stages, but we’ve already bought our tickets to Dublin to meet up with Matt and Dana. Matt found this really nice villa (see satellite photo below) for us to stay at where we would have our own house with a pool! If that’s not within our budget – there are plenty of other exciting options.

The backyard continues to make progress this year. We have 11 bougainvilleas and 11 gardenias slowly getting rooted along the east and west walls. I planted 2 new bower vines and 4 jasmine vines which are all doing quite nicely already (and all blossoming!). Between the vines I planted some Mexican petunia bushes and a really pleasantly fragrant sage bush. Likewise my tomatos, cucumbers, and bell peppers are doing really well. Hopefully that doesn’t change any time soon. The appricot tree has about 15 appricots growing at present and the orange tree actually looks like its making a recovery!

unwelcomed visitor

Yesterday was very warm and provided an opportunity to work long on the yard. I spent hours at Mesquite Valley Nursery and brought home a number of new plants, including 3 new bougainvilleas. The apricot tree seems to be doing well and we actually have some apricots growing now. The orange tree continues to struggle. I dug around the base of the tree to determine if anything unusual was going on and found some of the soil was really strange – somewhat gooey. I dug up much of the soil and in the process found an ugly white larvae. I have no idea what this thing would eventually turn into, but I wasn’t about to allow it to grow any older. When I smashed it, white goo came out as if it had been filled with milk. Yummy!

Spring 2008

board032508.jpg
We had an excellent board meeting this evening for Alethia Academy. The event was held at my house which I enjoy immensely. Plenty of cigars, pipes, beer, wine, and food to meet everyone’s desires. The school year is coming to an end and we are preparing for the 2008-2009 school year. I smoked a tasty Te Amo perfeco this evening followed by a Sancho Panza torpedo which was really excellent.

roass-and-ryan.jpg

Ross and Susie came over the other night. We had molé for dinner and then had the opportunity to smoke cigars on the patio. I had a Romeo y Julieta Viejo which I had high expectations, but sadly I was a bit disappointed. It was a nice evening nonetheless.

flower032508.jpg

A year ago I found some seeds on the ground which I planted. I have done this a few times, but never have I been as successful as with my Gazania ringens which I found either in Tucson or San Carlos (I can’t remember). I had no idea what I was growing up until today when my sister’s friend was able to identity the flower. It is really nice looking and is doing quite nicely.

Ben and his father and I went shooting last Wednesday. We had a very nice time and had perfect weather which we are accustomed to. I practiced with Ben’s .22 revolvers quite a bit and then spent some time using Ben’s father’s .40 Beretta pistol. I liked it quite a lot and the laser sight was a plus. I’m not sure if I prefer it to Ben’s glock or not.

San Carlos 2008

Yunuen and I went to San Carlos early Tuesday morning with her parents and our friends from Minnesota Earl and Dee. We stayed at the Hotel Armida in Guaymas. We chose this location due to the limited options – we didn’t have the necessary 5 days before arrival to book a condo at Condominiums Pilar. Guyamas isn’t too far from San Carlos and is nice in itself, but it was disappointing not to stay on the beach.

sc5.jpg

We went on a beautiful sunset cruise on Tuesday evening which I booked through Gary’s Dive Shop. Gary is a really nice guy and we enjoy using his shop. The cruise was excellent and the free margaritas were a plus! The scenery was incredible and the price was only $25/person for a couple hours. We saw a lot of jellyfish, sea lions, and thousands of pelicans.

sc7.jpg

On Wednesday we toured San Carlos and then ended up spending most of the day on the beach. I collected about about 50 pounds of really nice looking rocks which will be turned into a sweet home decoration. Yunuen made fun of me, but as usual, she will love the decoration it turns in to. The water was a bit cold, so we look forward to going back in a few months when the water temp will be in the 90s.

sc2.jpg

We ate at La Cobacha restaurant in Guaymas today before departing. We have been here before with Matt, Dana, Aaron, Christina, and Liam on a previous visit and like it quite a lot for their seafood. I ordered red snapper and a couple marlin tacos which was all very good. Dee ordered shrimp wrapped in bacon. Yun and her mom both ordered shrimp cocktail and Earl and Yun’s father ordered red snapper as wel (all 3 of us had it prepared different ways).

sc4.jpg

The highlight of the trip was the acquisition of 9 new Te Amo cigars (all different sizes and styles). I am intending to smoke one in a few minutes!
