Tucson trip

Yun and I made a quick trip to Tucson last Wednesday as we had to drop something in the mail which had a deadline by Friday. So we departed Wednesday afternoon and arrived at Matt’s house around 6pm. Matt ditches us for work (lame), so we went through some packages and packed up for a departure the next day (it was intended to be a quick trip).

Dana returned from Minnesota on Thursday in time for us to partake in what has become my favorite tradition of steak and potatoes. Obviously I make the potatoes and they are always amazing. Matt grilled some enormous t-bones. I ate too much. I always eat too much when it comes to the meal. So we decided to depart early Friday morning so we could enjoy Thursday evening. In retrospect, this was not the best of ideas. Mostly because I detest waking early.

We had the car packed up and were ready to go shortly after 6am. Everything seemed fine upon departure, but within a few minutes, Tila decided to unload the entire partially-digested contents of her stomach. Not a pretty sight and not exactly something I wanted to deal with first thing in the morning. So we spent a considerable time cleaning it up. Lovely, now we were on our way. But within seconds of departing for the second time, she unloaded once again. What a miserable situation. She would do the same one more time before we finally made it home.

On the positive side; I was able to buy a sweet military jacket for $2.99, as well as updated the registration on the Mazda.

Spanish Lessons

Today is a holiday in Mexico (Independence Day) and as such I had to cancel my class today in order to tend to some business.

Classes have been going well as they’ve resumed a couple weeks ago. I’ve only been doing an hour a day. I’ve been reading for the first 20 minutes and then working on grammar the latter 40 minutes. Last week I spent reviewing areas I had covered in my first 8 weeks. That went well and surprisingly I’ve retained most of what I had previously learned.

This week I have been spending most of my time on the subjuntivo pretérito mood. We only briefly touched on this subject in the latter portion of the first two months. Maybe a day at most, which was hardly sufficient. This seems to be one of the most difficult conjugation form for me to get so far. Add to that, the ability to properly discern when it should be used (which is the general problem I have with the subjunctive mood in general). Also, the irregular verbs (which are abundant) get really weird with this form.

Outside of class I have been extracting new vocabulary from the what I’ve been reading. This is helpful to gain new words. The reading has also helped with my pronunciation (which is horrible), especially with new words.

Big Jake 1971 / John Wayne

I haven’t seen many old Westerns, but I watched this one today and thought it was pretty good. The acting is often pretty bad, but still enjoyable.

Jerry Bob!

20140908_110143

On Monday morning I was able to eat at once of my favorite places in Tucson. I used to eat their a lot for lunch as I worked just down the street. I have been there around 30 times and have ordered the same meal every time.

Two eggs sunny side up. Double hash browns. Bacon. Wheat toast. And coffee. It was so great.

Sunday Breakfast

20140907_092145

We haven’t been in Tucson on a Sunday in quite some time. So last Sunday was nice as we were able to have breakfast with Matt/Dana and Nick/Betsy/Silas. Then we were able to visit Rincon PCA. I haven’t been there in over a year. It was nice to see people I haven’t seen for so long.

highway tire loss

PaperArtist_2014-09-10_21-14-29

We took a trip to Tucson last Saturday. Before departure, I noticed the tires were a bit rough. We bought the prior set just over two years ago, but with the weekend trips to Mexico for nearly a year, they wore down quick. As such, I scheduled an appointment for a new set on Monday morning before returning home.

Unfortunately, we didn’t make it far out of town before a tire blew. Gladly, it happened at an area of road construction and as such the speed limit was quite slow (and I was behind a truck going under the speed limit). It could have been ugly.

I found a place to pull over (a very rare thing at times given the lack of shoulders on the highway) and it took only about 15 minutes to replace it with the spare tire. In light of the speed restrictions, I didn’t want to wait until Tucson to find a replacement. So we stopped at a number of places south of Santa Anna.

White skin is a problem for this sort of thing. It means I pay 10 times the price as anyone else. The US plates on the car don’t help either. So after a number of absurd offers ($50 US for tires that had zero tread), I decided to head to Santa Anna. However, just before getting to that town, there is a tire place (a shack) on the side of the road which we have prior familiarity. When we moved to Hermosillo and had all of our stuff loaded on the trailer, one of the tires on the trailer blew out at around 3am. The only place we could find was the same place we found on Saturday. They also were the only people with a fair price for a decent looking tire.

The tire repair place was located on the side of the highway and doubles as the residence for a good size family. We happened upon the birthday party for Carlos on his 6th birthday. We were offered cake while we waited. I generally don’t like cake. But it would have been rude to refuse, so I ate it.

With our new tire, we were able to make it all the way to Tucson where were able to partake in our most awesome steak and potato tradition!

Love this song. Here’s the official video:

Here is an acoustic version of the same which I also like quite a lot. It is part of the tram sessions which have a huge list of awesome artists:

Union with Christ / Michael Horton / URCNA / 01:22:26
This radio interview with Dr. Horton was more in line with Letham. Horton is a professor at Westminster and his discussion of the subject is quite technical. He sheds light on the contrast between Lutheran and Reformed views of union with Christ. As well, he addresses what he perceives are some of the misconceptions.

Union with Christ: Interview with Robert Letham / OPC / 55:03
I was a bit surprised that Robert Letham had a British accent. Also, his last name is “Leh-thum”, not “Lee-thum” as I had previously thought. This recording was from a radio interview. The inteviewer is a bit painful to listen to.
Letham summarizes his book Union with Christ which I found helpful as I start the book today.

Union with Christ / Tim Keller / PCA / 35:15 I often enjoy the messages of Keller’s. His emphasis here is much different than Letham’s. The emphasis is on the forensic, not so much the actual union. I much prefer Letham’s emphasis.

baby

baby

We were approached today by a woman that was asking for money. Not an unusual daily occurrence here. So I asked her why she needed my money. She explained that she had just given birth to a premature baby and was trying to get to Agua Prieta with her other son that accompanied her (he looked about 3 years old).

Yun spoke with her further at length and we decided her story was legitimate. So we bought her a bus ticket to where she wanted to go. All was fine. And then maybe 15 minutes later she approached again for help with her baby. The baby wasn’t responsive and wasn’t waking up. In fact, he didn’t look alive. The mother was in a panic. We tried to remain calm. Yun eventually got the baby to respond and it was good to know he was still alive.

The mother hadn’t eaten in a while and it seemed like maybe it would be a good idea to feed the baby. Yun took her to a bathroom to do that and that seemed to improve the situation. We bought the mother a meal (one of my favorites; picadillo). She looked like she hadn’t eaten in days.

Yun spent more time with her and the baby until it was time for her to depart on her bus. The mother was in her early 20s. Her prior baby was from a man that had been incarcerated. As a result, her family disowned her. She then found another man which eventually got her pregnant as well. So he left her. She came to Hermosillo to try to find her family. She had no money and was at the mercy of the help of others. She found people willing to help her.

She was never able to find her family, but instead her baby (named Angel) was ready to be delivered a month early. So she went to the public hospital. Not a good place to go, but better than nothing I suppose (although that could be debated). So she gave birth and then was left to figure out what to do. With her baby wrapped in a blanket. In the blazing sun.

Yun and one of our employees eventually put her on the bus and said goodbye. She called an hour ago (roughly 5 hours after departure) to tell us she had arrived. She met an aunt on the way there that happened to be on the same bus who gave her information for her family in Hermosillo. Hopefully she’ll find a place to stay. Not an easy life to be sure.
