El Mecanico (again)

Alex was back at the house today. This time for the truck. We are in no short supply of mechanical needs it seems.

The truck has been running rough for months, ever since a return trip from Mexico late last year. Before departing San Carlos, I added some Slick40. I’ve used this product before with success, so I assumed I’d experience the same. That was not quite the case.

Since that return trip. The idle has been running high and it sounds a bit like a lawn mower.

It didn’t take too much work to determine the problem. There are little bronze valves in the intake manifold that regulate air flow. I was missing five of those valves. Not good. Apparently the Slick40 (or something else) had contributed to the screws loosening and the valves dropping out. Fortunately, they didn’t fall far and were found (including all ten screws).

Here are some of  the valves. They were totally black by being covered in carbon deposits. I spent some time cleaning them to bring them to beautiful luster seen below.

Once cleaned, I re-installed them (I was Alix’s helper today). The intake manifold also was saturated with thick carbon. I took the power sprayer to it which proved highly effective.

Sadly, I ordered the wrong gasket last week, so we were not able to put everything back together today. I just ordered the proper parts online and Alex will return when I receive them.

I also had him change the spark plugs. Some of them literally fell apart when they were being removed. Awesome. Alex wondered how the truck even ran. Historically, we don’t use this vehicle for much, other than trips to Mexico. Still, it’s incredible that we haven’t ended up on the side of the road on one of those trips.

So he will return next week. I’ll have him finish this job. I also need him to change the fuel tank sending unit as well, along with the fuel filter.

He spent the entire day here and it only cost me $70. That’s what I’d pay for one hour at a shop.

1D and 2D photonic crystal nanocavities for semiconductor cavity QED

It’s always an interesting thing to google yourself. I did so today and found my name associated with a dissertation on 1D and 2D photonic crystal nanocavities for semiconductor cavity QED. Apparently Ben has been profoundly inspired academically by our friendship, so naturally Yun and I were mentioned in his work, along with a list of others.

It’s disappointing of course that we’re not mentioned first.   :p

The entire thing can be read here.

We had marriachi at work today.  This is a fairly regular occurrence. I enjoy good mariachi.

Oleander seeds

image

I planted 25 nerium oleander seeds today at work. I ordered the seeds online a few weeks back. We have ambitions to plant roughly 50+ on the property in the next few weeks. They make a great hedge reaching heights of 12 feet. This is a much more affordable alternative to a cement wall.

I planted these seeds to possibly supplement what we plant on the property. They should only take a year to mature.

I also planted some daylily bulbs today. I have never had much success with bulbs, but I am hopeful.

Birdie…

This could have been my first eagle. I crushed it with my 2 iron off the tee. But sadly, my horrid putting led to a two putt birdie. I’ll take it, but it sure would have been nice.

El Mecanico

image

Recently we discovered some problems with the Passat. But thankfully we have a Mexican solution to that. His name is Alex.

He’s a great mechanic and hard worker and doesn’t charge much.

This time we had a link in the water line underneath the intake manifold. So he had to take apart a good deal of the engine.

brazilian philodendron

I’ve been growing golden pothos at work for years. I have a wonderful window ledge in my office that has just the right amount of sun. They grow rapidly and propagate easily.

The pothos looks very similar to the philodendron. I had a hard time telling the difference from photos. So I ordered a Brazilian philodendron from amazon for $5.99 plus shipping (about $10 all together).

The difference between the two are easily discernible when you have them in front of you. They both look great. I am going to take the plant to work tomorrow so I can start reproducing it.

Here are some pics of what I received.

Guaymas / March

Yun and I headed down to Guaymas for some beach action a couple weeks ago with Jeff, Beth, Liam, and Natalie. We left after work on Friday and returned on Monday.

Saturday night was poker night at Abe’s house. Mexicans versus Americans. I was the first to take out a Mexican, but that’s all I can claim. Jeff hung in there until the final three, but was eventually taken out. I blame the lack of re-buys and the rapid increase on the blinds. This was confirmed last weekend when Abe and Gabriel came to Tucson for a second round and were proven less than victorious.

We had a nice lunch at Bonifacio’s on Sunday. Part of the fun was the drive there. I had the Charger (Gab’s), Yun had the Camero (Abe’s). We each had some tasty dishes and then went for a walk on the beach.

There is a good size hill on the inlet that provides for some good photos. Here’s a photo looking down on Bonifacios.

Liam and I had plans to do some diving, but the water is just a tad too cold this early in the year. I suspect in a couple more months, the water will be in the 80s.

Mt Lemmon

Jeff, Beth, Yun and I spent the weekend up Mt. Lemmon last weekend. So very relaxing. So very cold. We had a great time. An excessive amount of (much needed) sleep. Great food. Great wine.

It’s so nice to get away for the weekend. It’s even nicer when it’s only an hour from the house. The winter-esque weather was a nice change. There was plenty of snow to enjoy!

The dogs accompanied us on this trip. They LOVE the mountains. Tila loves to dig. She spent most of her weekend digging.

Jeff’s dog Walcott was with us. Scout and Walcott do not exactly get along. Walcott likes Scout. Scout hates Walcott. They had more than one interaction. I caught one such special moment with the camera.

Fortunately Scout didn’t do something stupid which would lead to another couple months of vet visits.

We had a great time. It was a much needed rest.
