where the wild things are

250908093848_where-the-wild-things-are

I just watched Where the Wild Things Are which was based on a book from my childhood. The movie was exceptionally strange. I suspect it has a deeper meaning which I am unable to grasp. I’m not sure I would recommend it.

deconstruction day 2

demo-day-2-a

Last weekend Yun’s parents came up and together we continued the demolition process we started a couple weeks earlier. This time, however, we spent the entire day and nearly removed all of the drywall, the kitchen, and the bathrooms. Now the place looks like it was struck by a missle.

I have a rather lengthy list of upcoming tasks. Next on the list:

– remove all of the rubble
– remove all remaining interior walls
– remove non-load bearing framing
– pour cement to even out the floors
– frame new walls
– redo all electrical circuits/wiring/outlets
– install light fixtures
– redo all plumbing
– redo gas lines
– remove/replace hot water heater
– remove two exterior doors
– replace two other exterior doors
– move/replace windows
– install tile
– install new drywall
– texture and paint walls
– install kitchen
– install master and guest bath
– install new a/c system

There’s probably a lot more than I am missing – but this is the general plan at present.

Christmas Dinner 2009

We had Christmas dinner last night at our house. It was just Yun and I and her mom.

Navidad en Mexico 2009

Yun and I went down to Nogales with Ross, Susie, and Ashley last Sunday night for a Christmas dinner with the church there. We had a great time.

deconstruction!

deconstruction-120509

We finally closed on our new house on Friday. So Saturday morning we woke early to head over and start some work. Fortunately the new house is only about 5 minutes from where we live now. I’ve mapped out a rough plan as to the steps I’d like to take to restore the house. The first steps are to cover all the windows and to begin tearing down walls in the main house – and this is what we did.

I only had time to take down one wall – the one that separates one of the bedrooms from the master bedroom. I haven’t removed any of the framing yet as I’d like some second opinions on which are the load bearing walls. I’ve found that removing the walls is much easier than I had anticipated. I suspect rebuilding them will be a different story.

I am hoping I can save the old framing wood to use in the new walls and save a bit in material costs. Most of it appears to be in good shape.

It felt really good to begin the restoration process. There is an incredible amount of it to do!

partagas 3 serie d no 4 tubos

sweetest-xmas-gift-ever

I came home the other day to a very pleasant looking package on my table from the Canary Islands. At first I thought the package was empty, but then when I learned it was my xmas gift from Matt in Ireland, I found that I had 3 of the sweetest Cuban honeys awaiting my consumption – the Partagas 3 Serie D no. 4 Tubos (robustos) from the cigar mother land (via a remote island off the coast of North Africa). These are good times indeed.

Matt – if you hurry back to Tucson, I will save one of these for you (or at least a Brocatus).

thanksgiving

cepins-thanksgiving

Yun and I had Thanksgiving dinner with the Cepins; John, Patti, Joel, and Blanca. This meal ranks up there with top 5 favorite meals. I would probably add roast, steak and potatoes, carne asada, and meatloaf to that list. We had a great time with them.

Later, we watched a couple movies. One of which was entitled, Food Inc. which was very difficult to watch in light of how much I enjoy the food mentioned above. I’ve really never spent much time considering where our food comes from and I found it mostly disgusting. If ever there was a persuasive reason to stop eating processed food, this is probably it. I long for my compound where I can grow my own food.

Another movie we saw today was Surrogates which I enjoyed quite a lot. It certainly wasn’t of the caliber of The Matrix but it does have an underlining philosophical theme which triggers questions about the ethical problems inherent to technological development.

busted

Jeff and Beth came over for dinner tonight with Krystal for our Spanish lesson-night dinner. It was a lot of fun and the food was great. Jeff and Beth have recently purchased a house and have done a lot of remodeling, so we were a little excited to share some of the ideas we had for our new house. That led us to takingĀ  a drive to the house so Jeff and Beth could see it. As the electricity is turned off, we brought our flashlights.

About 15-30 mins after we got there we began to hear the police helicopter flying around the neighborhood. Never a good sign. Eventually I went outside to take a look to see where the helicopter was searching and noticed a couple police cars driving down the street with their lights off and heading towards me. I thought to myself, “huh, look at that, not something you see everyday.” The next thing I noticed was the officers next to the car all had their guns drawn and pointed at me commanding me to raise my hands. This I did. Apparently one of the neighbors had seen us in the house and had called the police. This prompted 5 or so cop cars to respond along with the helicopter and a few canine units.

We explained the situation and I was grateful that the police were so quick to respond to a neighbors concern. I just had not anticipated that being a concern when we went to show Jeff and Beth the house tonight. I suspect we won’t be making late night trips with flashlights any time in the near future.

birds and bees

I was working on the yard the a few days ago and happened to notice a hawk (the default term for any large bird that is not a crow) on a neighbor’s jeep. I grabbed my camera to take a photo with the telephoto. When I zoomed in, I noticed what appears to be a bee flying next to it. I wonder if hawks eat bees?

Zooming in on what appears to be a bee (maybe its a fly?):

Its exciting to see bees still out and about. It has been mid-70s during the day which I suspect will be changing soon. Come Spring, Ben and I intend to become apiarists with our first hive. Our new house really doesn’t have a yard that would accommodate hives, so Ben has offered his property.

marketdayofthesoul-dennison

I recently completed Dennison’s The Market Day of the Soul which was especially helpful and an appropriate compliment to Gaffin’s Calvin and the Sabbath which I had read last month. The latter is a survey of Calvin (and the Continental Reformers) view of the Sabbath, so Dennison’s work was an insightful compliment in expounding the Elizabethan Puritans view. Its an interesting topic.
