11k feet above sea level in Cuzco

We flew into Cuzco this morning from Lima, an absolutely beautiful flight over the Andes. We departed very early though and fortunately didnt have to check our packs, so we could quickly get through the airport and on to Los Ninos, an orphange we are staying at our first night in Cuzco. We were greeted upon our arrival with coca tea, which allegedly is suppose to help with the altitude sickness. I can´t say for sure if there was any effect, but I´ve been doing quite well thus far. We left Los Ninos early to walk around town. We visited the market where we were tempted to buy the skinned dog or pigs heads. They also sell guinea pig here which they claim is a delicacy. There is a restaurant in town that specializes in guinea pig. We found a travel agency (for lack of a better word) to help us with our train tickets and such for Aguascalientes. We intended to leave on Wednesday, but due to limited availability on the train, will be leaving tomorrow night instead and staying in Aguascalientes two nights. We will be in Machu Picchu on Thursday and on Friday we fly back from Cuzco to Lima.

We saw a lot of really neat ruins today. I´ve nearly used up one 2gig chip already. We toured a number of churches and convents as well. I dont remember the names of where we went and I dont have my pack with me at the moment (I am at an internet cafe). We saw many llamas and alpacas today and I found some nice new hats to add to my collection. Clothes made from alpacas and llamas are really cheap here. We don´t exactly have space for many things though.

Tomorrow we will spend nearly the entire day visiting ruins and towns in the “Sacred Valley” before catching our train at 8:30. We didn´t eat much all day, so when we returned to Cuzco today we found a nice place to eat. I had a very nice and large bowl of chicken soup, steak and rice, with french fries, and some strange dessert – all for $1.25 each (Yunuen got something similar). The food here is ridiculously cheap.

I still dont have the ability to upload photos as these computers are pretty cheap and I dont have my pack with me anyway….Not sure if I´ll have internet access in Aguascalientes!

ciao…

Miraflores, Peru

Yunuen and I are in an internet cafe in Miraflores…something like 30 cents an hour to use. We woke up fairly early this morning to have our “breakfast” at our hotel and then went to the shopping area we were at last night. We went to a travel agent to buy our plane tickets to Cuzco. It was really nice to find the prices to be significantly less than what we were finding online and buying them locally meant we wouldn´t have to pay the high taxes. We have spent most of the day walking around Miraflores. We went to some parks and saw a lot of hang gliders. It is very beautiful here, but quite cold (mostly in the 50s). We were ridiculously cold last night, so we had to get some extra blankets for our room (the rooms aren´t heated here).

We had lunch about 30 mins ago at Restaurante Pericos. I had papas a la huancaina which was cold potatos with a strange yellow sauce and a black olive. For my main meal, I had a slab of beef, on top of rice, with a egg on top and a cooked banana on top of the egg, with french fries on the side. Yunuen had corn soup and a similar main dish. She loved the banana.

We have to be at the airport at 4am tomorrow morning which is going to be a tad difficult. Fortunately, we´ll be in Cuzo early and will be able to spend the entire day relaxing, trying to get used to the elevation (nearly 12,000 ft above sea level). We went to a pharmacy just a few minutes ago and bought some drugs that allege to help with altitude sickness. The pills are called Sorojchi pills and are from Bolivia. We have been told that when we arrive at the orphange we are staying at in Cuzco they will be giving us coca leaf tea which is likewise suppose to help with altitude sickness.

As I didn´t bring my cable to upload pictures, I won´t be able to do that now, but perhaps later tonight….Sorpresa

Safe Arrival in Lima

Yunuen and I arrived in Lima, Peru a few hours ago. We rocketed through customs and were met by Augusto, a driver we had arranged to take us to our hotel in Miraflores. We are staying at Hotel Ducado. The rooms are pretty minimalistic, but the location is exceptional. We went for a walk not long ago and found a beautiful shopping area just off the ocean – we were somewhat surprised to find everything open after midnight! We bought some food and I had a Peruvian beer “La Cusquena”, which wasn’t exactly that great. We are in an extremely beautiful area and are excited about exploring things tomorrow. Another exciting find was a cigar shop which we will return to tomorrow! They had a window case full of cubans, but I am hoping to find something domestic. We are extremely exhausted now having not slept last night….Hopefully we will be able to add pictures tomorrow.

first experience using an auger on the bathtub drain

I spent some time today desperately attempting to unclog the bathtub drain with an auger I purchased recently. It proved to be a good purchase, but I wasn’t quite prepared for what came forth from the drain! The best description would be something like 50lbs of partially digested hair with some sort of light brown jelly covering everything. Sick

I have my first board meeting for the 2007-2008 school year this evening, which should prove eventful. I am excited about the inventory of cigars I have to choose from. Ben and Lis returned from Brazil recently and brought me back two sweet looking cigars; a Dona Flor (the robusto rates an 89!)and a Alonso Menendez (also rating an 89!). I still have four Cuban Cohibas a friend from work brought me a few weeks back.

It is hot today, but I enjoy it and all the more as Yunuen and I will be high in the Andes in a couple days where the temperature will be half of what I am experiencing today. We received her VISA from the Peruvian consulate in Los Angeles this morning which was quite the miracle in light of our getting them Yunuen’s passport on Monday! We are greatly indebted to Yun’s friend at work making that work as the normal processing time is a week.

Matt and Dana leave next week for their move to Ireland – so we hope to have one last American Division Spades Championship tomorrow evening. We are both very excited to visit them next month if I am able to get the time.

I have set up a web site for my sister’s blog using One&One who offers some exceptionally cheap web hosting and free domain registration. I set up our friend Betsy Dunlap with the same for her caligraphy business – though saddly time constraints have throttled the completion of both of these projects. I hope to be able to finish them quickly upon our return.  Open-mouthed

new carpet being installed

I woke absurdly early this morning to accomodate the carpet installers. I’ll get over it as we’ve been especially excited to get rid of our old carpet. The house is only a few years old, but the previous owners had a lot of dogs. Tomorrow we are having our sliding glass door replaced with a french door. The blinds are between the glass in the new door and so it should look a lot better than what we presently have.

Matt and Dana had a few people over last Sunday. It was my first chance to try one of my new Vegas Five Golds. It was very nice.

I planted some flowers a month or so ago and they are finally starting to blossom. They’re pretty cool looking.

I need a new humidor!

I came home to a sweet treat tonight!

44 x Vegas Gold Toros

25 x Brocatus Robustos

20 x Black Perl Congos

I didn’t have enough room in my humidor, so now I need another one! I also need a new hygrometer (preferably digital) for the one I have.

monsoon season

It’s been raining a lot lately, which is good for the grass. It also keeps us from triple digit temperatures which are sure to return shortly. I painted our guest room today and installed new blinds. We are having new carpet installed this Saturday and a having our sliding glass door replaced with a French door this upcoming week. I ordered 80+ cigars with Matt and a couple friends from work the other day and expect to receive them tomorrow. I am pretty excited about that. I smoked a Los Blancos this evening which was quite nice – mild with a nice taste.

We’re anxiously anticipating Matt and Dana’s departure date for Ireland so we can plan our trip accordingly. We figure we’ll give them at least a month to settle before we show up for our free room and board.

Below is a play list of songs I was listening to today while I worked around the house – feel free to click play and listen yourself, it may change your life given my exceptional taste in music!

TARANTULA!

Yunuen and I went to a dinner party yesterday in Ventana Canyon and on the way home I saw this monster tarantula crossing the road. I happened to have my camera with me, so I jumped out to take a photo. I was very brave! This is the first tarantula I have seen since moving to Arizona, so it was quite exciting!

Matt came over the other day to help me with my rock pile in the backyard. We have taken four loads now and it seems as though we have merely made a dent in progress. I suspect we have at least 5 more loads to make. We did get a chance to smoke some cigars on Tuesday and I took the opportunity to take a picture of my humidor.

Those Fonsecas are awesome!

Monster in the Garage

Yunuen and I went to Ben and Lis’ for dinner this evening with Matt and Dana. Lis made Brazilian hotdogs which were really tasty. When we got home, we found the monster below in our garage.

Creek Swimming!

We found a nice place to swim – the water wasn’t exactly hot, but it was fine once one became accustomed to the temp.
