Toscanos…

Yun and I spent the weekend in Mexico. Saturday night, we went to a restaurant called Toscanos which is near Dr. Vargas’ clinic.

Toscanos is an Italian place and this was my first Mexican Italian experience. It was a good experience.

Our appetizer:

Yun’s dinner:

This was also my first experience with the tannat grape. We bought a bottle of wine from Uruguay called Traversa. It was especially impressive and inspired a conversation regarding a future trip to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Yun’s parents also committed to going to Honduras in July.

I would definitely visit this restaurant again. We had fun and the food was great.

Here is our dessert:

Hevelius…najlepszy piwo.

Made my first trip to Total Wine tonight. Incredible. Like BevMo, but better. They have a much more impressive Spanish wine selection. I have been working my way through the various regions and the various grapes (mostly tempranillos and garnachas).

I purchased a Polish beer as well. Hevelius Kaper. It is made by Elbrewery in Elblag, Poland. Elbrewery makes a couple of my favorites: EB and Zywiec. The Hevelius is much stronger (8.7%). It is named after Johannes Hevelius, or the name his mother called him Jan Heweliusz. He was an astronmer, like Nicolaus Copernicus, or as his mother called him Mikolaj Kopernik. Polaks have always been genetically superior astronomers.

The beer was good. Strong. But enjoyable.

I enjoyed it while watching the movie Faster.

I like Dwayne Johnson (The ROCK) and Billy Bob Thorton. This movie was a movie about revenge. Dwayne Johnson is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the 2000s. I’ve loved nearly every movie of Arnold’s. Commando. Predator. Terminator. I get the same feeling with Johnson.  He was great in The Scorpion King.

I’m not sure this movie would appeal to many. However, if you like the Arnold movies I mentioned above, you might just like it.

shark tank…

ABC has a new show out there called Shark Tank. Hulu has four episodes archived here. Interesting premise. Entrepreneurs present business plans to venture capitalists who potentially bid on the opportunity to invest in those plans.

Good show.

couple of good releases

We saw two movies over the weekend. Both were great.

Limitless.

Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper (Hangover fame). Awesome movie, mostly due to the premise of the film. A pill that makes you smart. Side effect happens to be death. So the fun is short lived.

The Adjustment Bureau.

This is the story of a politician who meets a ballerina hiding in the men’s bathroom. The politician is played by Matt Damon, the ballerina by Emily Blunt. The premise of the story reminds me of an old Twilight Zone episode where life, as a series of events, is orchestrated by individuals who are responsible for these series of events. Nothing is left to chance.

The underlining theme seems to have something to do over the determinist debate. Matt Damon refuses to do as the adjustment bureau dictates. I suppose this might be intended as a case for freewill (whatever that means). If that was the intent, the movie failed miserably. However, the plot was enjoyable enough to watch and as such:

poker night

Friday night was the first of many poker nights at the house. Fourteen guys played. It was awesome. It would have been more awesome had I taken the pot.

I had taken an early lead and was chip leader for a good portion of the game. Ben was clearly impressed as can be seen above by his pointing to my massive pile of chips.

Sadly, that came crashing down when I went all in on a hand I was sure I had. Even so, I had the opportunity to smoke three cigars (they get better the more you smoke) and enjoyed time with the guys.

First place: Daniel Lindberg ($85)
Second: Bill Nye ($50)
Third: Ben Hoffman ($30)
Fourth: Me ($10)

ok, not allergies. something nonetheless.

So the dogs apparently don’t have a case of bad allergies. Good guess on our end. Thank you internet for leading me to believe I could self diagnose my dogs ailments and then prescribe the wrong medicine.

Yun took the beasts to the vet yesterday and was given some doctor-prescribed medicine and some cones for their heads. The dogs hate the cones, much like we hate listening to them run into things in the middle of the night.

Apparently we have another week of this.

household allegeries

This has been an unusual Spring. A few weeks back we could hardly see the mountains due to the amount of dust and pollen in the air. This has taken its toll on us and the dogs.

I have never had allergies in my life and I’m pretty confident the dogs haven’t either. However, last night we realized the dogs had a problem opening one of their eyes. Not good. We did a bit of online research and concluded it was likely due to allergies. I have a similar problem with my eyes, but not to the same degree.

We have been sniffling and sneezing quite a bit. So we went to Walgreens tonight to buy some Benadryl. Apparently it is not only safe for humans, but a popular allergy remedy for pets. After the Benadryl, we applied some chamomile tea bags to their eyes and gave them an immune supplement Yun purchased earlier.

Ah yes, the wisdom of the Internet.

Exploring new places in Mexico

Yunuen and I took a trip to the south of Mexico with my uncle Dennis and his girlfriend Beth. We traveled through five States (Sonora, Jalisco, Guanajuanto, Queretero, and Michoacan) and spent time in the cities of Hermosillo, Guadalajara, Guanajuanto, Queretero, and Guaymas.

Dennis and Beth flew in on Saturday and we departed for Hermosillo early Sunday morning. On the way, we stopped in Nogales to have breakfast at Yun’s parent’s house. After breakfast, we drove with her parents to Imuris where we spent a little bit of time at a ranch where Dr. Vargas keeps his roosters.

From Imuris we continued south to Magdalena where we spent a little bit of time touring the town and seeing some sites. Magdalena is a nice little place and only about an hour from the border.  We traveled to Hermosillo from Magdalena which was a couple more hours south.

In Hermosillo, we stayed at the Royal Palace Hotel which I had found through tripadvisor.com. It had great reviews and we were pleased that it lived up to those reviews. Also, we were able to park the truck at the hotel for the remainder of our vacation which was significantly less expensive than the airport. We had a nice dinner at Mariachisimo that evening.

Early the next day we took our VivaAerobus flight to Guadalajara. The tickets were about 100 pesos each (roughly $8.80), but with taxes was just over $100 each. Still not bad. We printed our boarding passes at home and so when we arrived at the airport, we only had to go through security. No lines, no waiting. I love this airline (it is co-owned by RyanAir).

When we arrived in Guadalajara, we rented a car from Hertz (~$25/day for the car, and ~$35/day for the insurance). Guadalajara is a bit of a nightmare to drive around. We eventually made our way out of the city and were on our way to Guanajuato. It was a beautiful drive and on the way we found an  enormous old hacienda out in the middle of  nowhere. We stopped and the owner gave us a tour of the place which included a visit up to the bell tower which had an impressive view.

Guanajuato is an incredible city. It is now my favorite place in Mexico and I believe the most beautiful and interesting. Driving in the city, however, was less than pleasant and make Guadalajara look simple. The roads are extremely narrow and extremely confusing. As such, we hired a taxi cab to lead us to our hotel shortly after our arrival to the city. This probably saved us hours of frustration. Once in the city, we parked the car and traveled around by foot.

When you first arrive to Guanajuato, you are introduced to a complex system of roads both above and BELOW the ground. When we were told about a ‘long tunnel’ we would pass when we arrived, we had no idea.

The highlight of Guanajuato was probably the dinner we had at a restaurant called Las Mercedes. We chose it because of the incredible reviews on tripadvisor. Incredible is understated. The place is run by one family out of their home and it is quite small. The father and daughter served our food and wine while the mother and son cooked our food. They all spent time with us at our table introducing themselves and telling us about the food. The menu was all family recipes. A fusion of ancient recipes with a modern presentation. It was impressive.

A couple days later we departed Guanajuato to travel to Queretero. Queretero is much larger than Guanajuato with many interesting things to see and do. We stayed at a spectacular boutique hotel called La Casa del Atrio. Yun and I did a lot of shopping and purchased some neat things for the house. We spent hours going up and down the streets and saw a few museums. We also had the opportunity to take a trolley tour which gave some history of the city.

We departed Queretero on Friday and drove back to Guadalajara so we could spend the night near the airport before our early departure on Saturday. On the way, we stumbled across some ruins in a small pueblo in the middle of nowhere.

Due to some stellar navigational skills (which he obviously got from me), Dennis was able to find a route into Guadalajara which brought us right to Hertz and our hotel. It was too easy. We spent the night in Guadalajara so as to wake early for our ridiculously early flight to Hermosillo Saturday morning.

We arrived in Hermosillo after a short flight, picked up our truck, and then made our way to the beach in Guaymas. We didn’t have enough time in Guaymas. We never do. I could live there.

All together – this was a great trip and one we would readily do again. I will add photos to the travel link above.

Movie: Unstoppable

Yun and I watched this movie last night. The premise, at first, seemed a bit bland. It’s a train movie. But surprisingly, it was a great action flick that we enjoyed quite a lot. The acting isn’t particularly impressive. The characters aren’t particularly interesting. It must have been the impressive cinematography and sweet action scenes – either that or I am just easily excited by things blown up.

Every day I pass these two under a large tree on my way to my car after work.
