I have been looking for 50 lb pages of rice lately to see what the most cost effective type I could get.  Food City has a few decent options. A bag of Blue Ribbon runs about $10 for a 20 lb bag. They also have Mahatma rice for $13.59 for a 20 lb bag. I went to the Asian Market at Stone and Grant this afternoon at the recommendation of a friend last night and found they carried 50 lb bags of jasmine rice for about $30. I decided on buying  a bag of Three Ladies Brand.

When I returned home to fill the 6 gallon bucket, I realized that they don’t actually hold 50 lbs as I had anticipated. I was of the impression I’d get 50 lbs in each bucket because I had seen them listed that way at the site I purchased the buckets. Emergency Essentials is the least expensive place I have found online to purchase bulk food. For rice, that amounts to a little over $60/bucket with shipping. Buying locally amounts to about $40/bucket – and I get to pick the brands.

Fredericksburg, Virginia

I flew into Richmond last weekend to spend a week at work in Frederiksburg, Virginia. It has been an interesting experience. This part of the country is absolutely beautiful and my first thought upon arrival last Saturday was that I could easily relocate here. There are huge pine trees and a smell that accompanies the many forests that is as equally pleasant. Its attraction is in part due to its stark contrast to the desert. The grass is greener here, the soil is fertile, the numerous water bodies are enticing. We don’t have these things in Tucson, so I suppose it is natural to want what you don’t have – particularly when one is interested in things horitculutral.

Over the course of the week I found myself longing for things I didn’t have: jalapenos with every meal, perfect weather every day, a back yard that will never be finished, dogs that rarely listen, and family! Virginia is really nice. It is clean, modern, and in what appears to be a perpetual state of development. But it is is no Tucson.

If it isn’t obvious – I am anxious to return home! I miss all that good stuff even if I did have an enjoyable time here in a beautiful part of the country. It is precisely trips like this that remind me that Yunuen and I should spend a lot more time traveling in North America than we have. There are so many things to see and experience that I think we forget about.

I am flying home today. I arrived a tad too early (three hours!), but the benefit was that I managed to get seat 1A on my flight to Chicago!

Easter in Virginia

I flew into Virginia on Saturday for work in Fredericksburg for the week. logoOn Sunday, I visited Bethel Reformed Presbyterian (OPC) for Easter. It was a good service – a sort of hybrid between the RPCNA and the PCA. No contemporary music, but a lot of classical instrumentation.

While at Church I had the opportunity to meet Mr. M.R. Fulks (who goes by M.R.) who invited me over to his house for Easter lunch with his family. Mr. Fulks is the owner of a beautiful 1000 acre farm. I followed him and his wife to their home out in the country.

Mr. Fulks’ farm is called Belvedere Plantation and he not only grows organic fruits and grains (strawberries, pumpkins, rye, wheat), but also has grounds (over 600 acres) for family visits where they can come pick strawberries, picnic, enjoy a petting zoo, pig races, among various other things. He told me he receives approximately 5000-6000 people a day on the weekends (not bad at $14/person!).

The majority of Mr. and Mrs. Fulk’s family have homes on the property and they joined us for lunch. The food was extraordinary; ham, lamb, peas, corn, potatoes, asparagus, and endless other plates. Dessert included strawberries from the farm which were really tasty.

The Fulk’s main home was a nice colonial style farm house that was built in 1770. There dining room was a converted, dome-roofed chapel that was large enough to accomodate everyone.

fulks-main-homeApparently a few years ago a journal was discovered which was written by an indentured servant by the name of  John Harrower that lived in the home in the late 18th century. I found excerpts online which were really interesting:

“Thursday 26th. This day at noon the Colonel sent a Black with a cuple of Horses for me and soon after I set out on Horseback and aravied at his seat of Belvidera about 3 pm and after I hade dined the Colonel took me to a neat little house at the upper end of an Avenue of planting at 500 yds. from the Main house, where I was to keep the school, and Lodge myself in it.

This pleace is verry pleasantly situated on the Banks of the River Rappahannock about seven Miles below the Toun of Fredericksburgh, and the school’s right above the Warff so that I can stand in the door and pitch a stone on board of any ship or Boat going up or coming doun the river.”

Also on the property was their goat Snowflake who I think might be confused about its species as it seemed to act more like a dog with its wagging tale than any goat I have ever seen. I wouldn’t mind having some goats some day should we have the property.

So far I really like this part of the country a great deal. It is very green with beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, property costs do not seem to be in the range of the possible at this point in time. So despite the ease of being able to relocate to this office, I think I still prefer Tucson.

Emergency Essentials

I received my order from Emergency Essentials today when I arrived home from work. My order consisted of: (3) lidless buckets, (3) red gamma seal lids, and (3) mylar bags. The cost was about $20 per each 6 gallon bucket (with the seal and mylar bag). This seemed like a cost-effective way to get stored food, as opposed to buying 6 gallons of food already sealed. Also, I am able to pick the brand of food I am storing as well to ensure I get exactly what I want.

For those of the Keynsian mindset, storing food would probably seem absurd at this point given the naive optimism that government intervention is somehow good for our economy. On the contrary, government intervention only ensures an impending unprecedented economic collapse. The same sort of collapse (only greater), that FDR was responsible for during the Great Depression. This is the insane policy of spending money to get out of debt. It obviously has not and will not work – and therefore it only seems wise to prepare for the worst (if history can be trusted to predict the future).

I figure I have nothing to lose – should the Austrians be wrong (unlikely), then I will just have extra food around the house with a long shelf life. It’s always possible something else comes up that we may benefit from having surplus food. We eat a lot of rice and beans anyway!

Edmund A. Opitz (1914 – 2006)

I just completed Opitz’s The Libertarian Theology of Freedom and found it insightful and an enjoyable read. I am aware that most people could care less about these things – but I thought I would post a segment of the book that I enjoyed.

Claims of Government
It takes but a moment’s reflection to convince ourselves that the preposterous claims of government are sheer fraud. Take, for example, the matter of economic security. The government promises to provide us with at least a minimum of economic goods – houses, good, clothing, and so on. Now, no person can give away what he does not possess, and neither can government. Government does not produce the economic goods it promises to dispense, nor is it a factor in their production; people do the producing. The three factors in production are land, labor, and capital; government is not one of these. Before government can give you anything, it must first take it away from somebody else; or before it can give somebody else anything, it must first take it away from you.

This is not the way to prosperity or justice. In current theory, government promises to be a Robin Hood, robbing the rich to pay the poor. This theory is immoral, but the practice is even worse. The promise is soon forgotten, and Robin Hood robs the rich and the poor alike to pay Robin Hood.

Nogales Church Plant

nogale-040409

Yun and I went to Mexico early this morning with our friend Bruce who is the Missions Director from CFC. We went down to have breakfast with Yun’s parents. Later we met with Josue and Martha at their house to get an update on the church plant. Miguel and Obed came over to Josue’s house later to visit. We had an opportunity to visit Miguel and Obed’s house today as well as they all live in the same neighborhood.

Miguel and Obed had their families with them and we then met up with Yun’s parents at a restaurant for lunch. We had some excellent pork and beef of which I probably ate too much.

the bike is ready!

Yesterday was an exciting day as I insured my bike (less than $20/month), registered it, and got my permit! Eventually I will have to get my endorsement, but for the time being, I am ok with the restrictions that accompany the permit. I took it for a long ride yesterday and today. It is a lot of fun touring around parts of town I don’t normally visit and seeing things I don’t often see.

Friday night I went to a party and Ben and Lis’ house which was a lot of fun. I learned a game called Mafia which I anticipate I will have the opportunity to play many times in the future. It was a lot of fun.

Saturday evening we celebrated Jesus’ 31st birthday with some fajitas and Pacificos. We played a few hours of Texas Hold ‘Em where I successfully managed to win my money back!

I started Edmund Opitz’s The Libertarian Theology of Freedom which I was inspired to get after reading his introduction in Albert J. Nock’s Our Enemy the State recently. I am pretty impressed thus far and I’ve made my way through about a third of it.

“The sincere intention of the collectivist or the planner is to help people. But he chooses to help people through political action, which when spelled out means helping some people by hurting others.”

Tila’s big day

Yunuen is in Mexico at the moment with the dogs as she took Tila down to be spade. We’ve been wanting to do this for some time so that we prevent any unwanted pregnancies. We are chatting on the webcam at the moment and she showed me Tila who looks like death! Hopefully she’ll have a quick recovery.

shooting lessons

range-031409

Ben hired me for shooting lessons today – so we headed off to the Three Points range for a few hours of shooting at the zombie holding paper plates. I have come to realize that I shoot far better in the first 30 minutes than I will for the entire remaining time. This of course is very disappointing.

Today I mostly used a couple .22 revolvers and a Smith & Wesson .40 pistol. I find that I still prefer his glock.
